A two-day workshop on translational medicine

5 December 2019

In September, researchers dedicated to responding to the challenges posed by translational medicine on behalf of the European Academy gathered at the impressive headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest.

TM means the return of basic research and clinical research results, and more broadly the return of all kinds of research results to patient care as soon as possible. Answers to health questions can only be made in multidisciplinary working groups and published to colleagues, the lay public, or even decision-makers and industrial partners, so that these can then become practices helping the patient care.

The translational approach has evolved a lot since the 2000s, but there have also been problems that slow down the process, such as defining TM, funding different programs, or the lack of TM centers, and communication difficulties between different levels.

Understanding these, the European Academy has launched a project in the autumn of 2018, the workshop of which was held in the Hungarian capital. The two-day workshop raised many problems, some of which were answered as well. The participants agreed that the discussion should be continued since the common goal is a better and more efficient patient care, which is provided by translational medicine in the 21st century.
