Abstract:
I will present a sequence of studies from the past 11 years focusing on psychophysical and electrophysiological methods to access neural mechanisms of the visual system. In humans, for instance, we experienced that asymmetrical dysfunction appears in the visual mechanisms responsible for processing either increase (ON system) or decrease (OFF system) in retinal illumination. This imbalance has a clear effect in the mechanisms responsible for the cone opponent processing while the visual mechanisms responsible for the luminance processing are relatively spared. Besides contributing to a better understanding of the functional and structural organization of the visual pathways, there is a substantial clinical value for the early diagnosis of diseases, which might affect initially only specific visual mechanisms. In experimental models, for instance, we have found the retina as a sensitive biomarker for dysfunctions in the central nervous system due to deficiencies in products of the DMD gene. The more detailed knowledge of the visual condition has benefit for the development of therapeutic methods to modulate specific neural mechanisms impaired by diseases.
